NS's two sides play at separate grounds this week, with Premier League taking on St Marys-Penrith Cougars at Western Weekender Stadium, while Jersey Flegg takes on Penrith Panthers at Penrith Stadium. Both games are on Saturday at 2:30 pm (PL) and 5:50 pm (JF).

The details for the VB Premier League in the Big League are:

Round 24: St Marys-Penrith Cougars v North Sydney Bears
Venue: Western Weekender Stadium
Date: Saturday 21st August
Kick-off: 2:30 pm

North Sydney's team is:

1. Scott McLEAN
2. Tristan RAMSAY
3. Christian HILL
4. Namila DAVUI (no. 12 last week)
5. Andrew BEATTIE
6. Matt THURSTON (no. 7 last week)
7. Matt ROSE (back after missing last week)
8. Brad McLEAN
9. Ben FISHER (c)
10. David LETELE
11. Clint COURTNEY
12. Kurt BRYANT (back after missing last week)
13. Paddy WILLIAMSON (no. 17 last week)

Interchange
14. Damon NOBLE
15. Wayne McDADE (no. 13 last week, but started on bench)

Missing from last week's squad:
Tarei McKENZIE (no. 4)
Nathan SMITH (no. 6)
Josh MILLS back (no. 15)
Michael CHAN (no. 16, although did not play)

Coach: Gary LARSON

I don't know if last week's game took a toll on NS, but three players are missing from the side that took on Souths (plus Michael CHAN who was listed in "Big League" but whose name wasn't read out). On the plus side, Kurt BRYANT and Matt ROSE are making returns, but NS still only has a squad of 15. If he isn't injured, expect Nathan FERGUSON to be promoted. He's not listed in the JF side for this week however.

Last week's game was an indication of the sort of football that NS can play. Souths is lower on the table than St Marys, but isn't that far behind. However, St Marys - currently coming 5th - is looking for a top 4 finish and is only 2 pts behind 3rd placed Manly, and 1 behind 4th placed Canberra. It will not want to lose this game, so NS can expect a difficult match ahead.

This will be the first game between NS and St Marys in 2004. The sides played each other twice in 2003:

Rd 3 @ NSO L 0-48
Rd 8 @ WW L 0-48

NS's remaining games in PL are against Wests (13th) at Campbelltown and against Cronulla (11th) at NSO.

At 6pm at Western Weekender on Sat 21st, there will be a Schoolboys Test Match between Australia and England Academy. I don't know if the stadium is to be cleared after the Premier League game, or if the PL will be a curtain raiser. There will be well over an hour between the end of PL and the start of the Test Match. Despite the appeal of this game, there should be plenty of time to get over to Penrith for the JF match.

The details for the Jersey Flegg in the Big League are:

Round 24: Penrith Panthers v North Sydney Bears
Venue: Penrith Stadium
Date: Saturday 21st August
Kick-off: 5:50 pm

North Sydney's team is:

1. John RUSSELL
2. Josh LEWIS
3. James DONLAN (no. 4 last week)
4. Sema MATAORA (no. 3 last week)
5. Mahana TAI
6. Bryce POISEL
7. Brett LAW
8. Bobby BRIGHT
9. Tim WOODBINE
10. Cheyne TICKLE
11. Lee TE MAARI
12. Mitch FINNIGAN (c)
13. Nathan WARD

Interchange
14. Jacob MARTIN
15. Scott CROSS (no. 18 last week)
16. Ina PAPERA (no. 15 last week)
17. Nathan WILSON (no. 22 last week)
18. Ben FRYER (no. 19 last week)
19. Mitch ERICKSON (no. 20 last week)
20. Tane TUTAKI (no. 16 last week)
21. No listing
22. Scott HEAP (no. 21 last week)
23. Michael JOHNSON (no. 25 last week)

Missing from last week's squad
Nathan FERGUSON (no. 22 last week, although I think he played PL)

Coach: Josh WHITE

Three rounds to go, and NS goes into this game with an almost unchanged starting line-up, just a swapping of the centres. The bench has shuffled a bit, possibly reflecting coach Josh WHITE's rotational arrangement. Last week's win over the higher placed South Sydney was an awesome display, and NS is now challenging for 7th spot, and possibly even higher. However, the centre of the table is so tight that a loss will just as easily cast NS into a vulnerable position. With three rounds left, there is plenty of scope for NS (24 pts) to be caught by Illawarra and Newcastle (both 21 pts) or Wests (20 pts), although Canberra (19 pts) is probably too far away.

The centre of the table is as follows:

6. Cronulla 27 pts (+120) [Still has a bye in hand]
7. Souths 25 (+21) [Still has a bye in hand]
8. Norths 24 (-40)
*****
9. Illawarra 21 (+18)
10. Newcastle 21 (-20)
11. Wests 20 (-152)
12. Canberra 19 (-92)

Games involving the other TEAMS this week are:
NEWCASTLE v St George (13th) (Fri)
ILLAWARRA v Balmain (4th) (Fri)
Parramatta (5th) v WESTS (Sat)
CANBERRA v Sydney Roosters (1st and undefeated) (Sun)
SOUTHS v Manly (14th) (Sun) - who to support may pose a dilemma for any NS fans going to the games on Sunday
CRONULLA bye

NS's remaining games in JF are against Canterbury (3rd) at Telstra and against Cronulla (6th) at NSO.

Just heard on ABC radio that NS won the Jersey Flegg game over Penrith by 20 to 12! Don't know how Premier League went.

In the Parra v Wests JF game, Wests df Parra by 20-12.

Just checked the St George website, it says that its JF side lost 36-50 to Newcastle. I can't find anything on either the Illawarra or Balmain sites about how last night's game went.

Updated table (* means this week's result not included)

6. Cronulla 29 pts (+120) [this week's bye included]
7. Norths 26 (-32)
*8. Souths 25 (+21) [v Manly on Sunday] [Still has a bye in hand]
*****
9. Newcastle 23 (-6)
10. Wests 22 (-148)
*11. Illawarra 21 (+18) [v Balmain on Friday]
*12. Canberra 19 (-92) [v Sydney Roosters on Sunday]

Great result for the Jersey Flegg boys.

I heard that Illawarra defeated Balmain last night.

This was a very good result for the JF. A great defensive effort. Everybody on the field did their jobs well. This result would have shocked Penrith who are sitting at 2nd on the table.

a great jf effort as we would do well to avoid the jf rorters team in the finals for as long as possible
