After last week's bye (and before next week's bye - stupid draw), it's a chance to get our shaky wobbly season back on track.

According to the NSWRL website, the game is being "Broadcast LIVE on Triple H 100.1 FM" - www.triplehfm.com.au.

There's also a Ron Massey Cup curtain-raiser at 1PM between NS feeder side Concord/Burwood/Glebe and Auburn.

South Sydney is playing on Friday night, so we may pick up some players from its 8-man bench:

14 Damien Cook
15 Tyrell Fuimaono
16 Anthony Cherrington
17 Zane Musgrove
18 Braidon Burns (named for NS at fullback)
19 Jason Clark
20 Robbie Rochow
21 David Tyrrell (named for NS at front row)

I don't think we have "home ground advantage" this year - including the one at Chatswood, we've lost all five games. In contrast, we've won six of our seven away games.

It is an important game - a win will put us back in the top four. Competition points are becoming crucial as there is a pack developing among the clubs outside the top 2. Even last placed Wests Tigers (8pts) aren't that far behind, and Blacktown Workers (second last) is well on its way to beating NZ Warriors - leading 30-12 with 5 mins to go.

The NSWRL match centre has three changes to the starting side with all three players who were originally named dropping to the bench. The changes include a swap of Piki ROGERS and Brad DEITZ.

In
15 Piki ROGERS (originally no 14, in for 9 Bradley DEITZ)
19 Anthony CHERRINGTON (in for 10 Clayton WILLIAMS)
20 Jason CLARK (in for 13 Cheyne WHITELAW)

Out
16 Fred Junior MAUALA
17 Tom FREEBAIRN

Toby RUDOLF remains on the bench but has changed number from 15 to 14.

It's being covered by Steele Sports as well as Triple H.

The wet weather has made it a bit of a slog at times, but it sounds like an entertaining game. Wenty took a 6-0 lead after 20 mins, scoring through some quite flimsy defence which the commentators said was quite a contrast to their solid defence earlier in the game.

Luke Kelly set up a try to Ed Murphy in the 26th minute with a great cut out pass. The Wenty defence looked to have cleaned him up but he managed to ground it before he was shoved through the fence. Eli Levido's conversion from near the touch line goes wide.

In the 30th minute another cut-out pass, this time from Levido, led to NS's second try, scored by Abbas Miski. He ran around to improve the angle, but Levido's conversion attempt hit the upright to leave the score at 8-6.

Wenty was on the attack to finish the half but Miski knocked the ball dead as the siren sounded.

Commentators say that Levido and Kelly are working well together.

Half time
North Sydney Bears 8 (Murphy, Miski tries; Levido 0 goals from 2 attempts) lead
Wentworthville Magpies 6 (1 try; 1 goal)

A 16-8 win for the Bears. A pretty similar second half - end to end football, but a bit of a slog at times and the wet conditions meaning a bit of dropped ball.

Wenty equalised in the 48th minute with a penalty goal, but NS regained the lead when Levido slotted a penalty goal to make it 10-8. I don't know what that was for as the broadcast had dropped out. We had the chance to make it 12-8 shortly afterwards but decided to run. It came to naught, as did the other three times we turned down the two points. (In a low scoring game, why would you turn down two easy points? Seriously.) We took the next opportunity, in the 72nd minute to make it 12-8.

After a few tense minutes the game looked sealed with four minutes to go when Piki Rogers broke a couple of tackles and then passed to Miski who still had work to do, but got the ball down. Levido's attempt from half a metre in from touch went wide. The score was 16-8 when the tension continued with Wenty winning the ball from the kick off.

But NS held on to win its first game at home for 2017.

Full time
North Sydney Bears 16 (Miski 2, Murphy tries; Levido 2 goals from 5 attempts) lead
Wentworthville Magpies 8 (1 try; 2 goals)

Interchange
15 min HIA OFF Piki ROGERS / ON Brad DEITZ
16 min 1 OFF Anthony CHERRINGTON / ON Cheyne WHITELAW
31 min 2 OFF David TYRELL / ON Toby RUDOLF
38 min HIA OFF Jason CLARK / ON Piki ROGERS
-----
49 min 3 OFF Cheyne WHITELAW / ON Anthony CHERRINGTON
56 min 4 OFF Toby RUDOLF / ON Jason CLARK
61 min 5 OFF Brett GREINKE / ON David TYRELL
70 min 6 OFF Anthony CHERRINGTON / ON Clayton WILLIAMS

I alternated between Steele Sports and Triple H. SS dropped out at half time, and HHH dropped out midway through the second half, so I went back to SS. Both commentary teams are very good. It is frustrating that two of them cover one game, whereas other games don't have any coverage.

Table
1. Wyong Roos 25 (+186)
2. New Zealand Warriors 21 (+105)
3. Mounties 17 (+24)
4. North Sydney Bears 16 (+7)
-----
5. Illawarra 16 (-34)
6. Penrith Panthers 15 (+96)
7. Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 14 (+32)
8. Newtown Jets 13 (-45)
-----
9. Newcastle Knights 11 (-98)
10. Wentworthville Magpies 10 (-20)
11. Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles 10 (-86)
12. Wests Tigers 8 (-170)
