Without wanting to resort to cliches, this is a "season on the line" game. Our results in recent weeks have been pretty poor, and we're in danger of dropping out of the eight. Technically, we have already dropped out of the eight going into this game - Wentworthville has moved ahead of us on points difference following its win yesterday.

The game is being covered by Channel 9, the first of three North Sydney games in a row being broadcast on free to air TV.

For the first time in a while, none of North Sydney's named squad played for Sydney Roosters. However, there are some changes from the team named on Tuesday, including one to the starting line up - see below.

Match details are below.

An impressive first half sees the Bears leading 22-0. It's not as one sided as the score suggest - North Sydney's defence has been solid. The forwards do a lot of work.

The first try came from a beautiful grubber from Brock Lamb into the path of Thomas Fairbairn. The second came after an offload from Drew Hutchinson when he looked to have half the Wests side hanging onto him. The ball found its way to Billy Smith - playing his first game since getting injured in the finals last year when playing for Wyong - who scored in the corner. The third try came a couple of minutes later when Wests dropped an up and under and Smith toed it through for a second try. The fourth try was the result of a couple of breaks and another offload from Hutchinson in the leadup to get us field position. Hutchinson was involved again when he was the one who put the ball through for Kieren Moss.

There seem to be a few Bears fans in the crowd. The first crowd shot showed Ken and Mark and a third bloke in a Bears jumper. The "Bears Faithful" according to the commentators.

Half time
North Sydney Bears 22 (Tom Freebairn 16', Billy Smith 27' 31', Kieren Moss 36' tries; Brock Lamb 17' 29' 37' conversions) lead
Western Suburbs Magpies 0

A good win to the Bears, although North Sydney didn't extend themselves in the second half, just doing enough to keep things under control. There was nothing really flash about the second half, particularly in the first 20 minutes. The final score was 32-10, meaning that the second half was 10-all. The commentary panel gave Drew Hutchinson the man of the match, just ahead of Max Bailey. Hutchinson came across well in the post-match interview.

The broadcast finished with more footage of Mark.

The win lifts us to 6th spot on 16pts with a +3 F&A, while Wests drop to 9th spot on 14pts, and trailing Wenty on points difference. Things are pretty tight. Next week we play Newtown Jets, in 7th spot on 15pts. The game is being televised by Channel 9. Wests and Wenty play next week.

Full time
North Sydney Bears 32 (Tom Freebairn 16' 70', Billy Smith 27' 31', Kieren Moss 36', James Tuitahi 62' tries; Brock Lamb 17' 29' 37', Drew Hutchison 72' conversions) df
Western Suburbs Magpies 10 (Kane McQuiggin 54', Watson Heleta 75' tries; Jock Madden 76' conversion)
