This thread was about New Zealander Bears
http://www.mightybears.com/viewtopic.php?t=551

It would be interesting to know who played for New Zealand whilst playing for the Bears.

I would quess Daryl Halligan would have been the only NZ test player first picked from North Sydney. Fred Ah Kuoi, Sean Hoppe, Olsen Filipaina, Clayton Friend and Mark Graham all played tests for NZ while at Norths.
It would have been unusual for Kiwi selectors to look outside NZ before the late 1970's unless on a tour to the northern hemisphere.

The Evil that lurks on the dismal side of the Roseville bridge.

North Sydney players stolen by scum: A short statistical history.

I care not that some of the players from the Manly 1947 team were effectively 'Manly' juniors, and that some players in subsequent years finished off their careers at Brookvale after being unloved by Norths officials. Most were stolen i tells ya. Anyway, bulk theft in 47 and 78 handed us wooden spoon teams.

first season of theft: name [first grade years at norths]

1947: Dick Allerton [1937 to 38 & 40 to 42]
1947: Eric Bathgate [1944 to 45]
1947: Ray Black [1946]
1947: Johnny Bliss [1944 to 46]
1947: Albert Collins [1945]
1947: Arthur Dawes [1944]
1947: Jim Hall [1942 to 45]
1947: Keith 'Megsy' Kirkwood [1945 to 46]
1947: C 'Kelly' McMahon [1943 to 46]
1947: Max Whitehead [1942 to 43,46]
1956: Peter Diversi [1952 to 55]
1957: Alf Madden [1955 to 56]
1958: Norm Twight [1955 to 57]
1960: Barney McEvoy [1956 to 59]
1961: Bernie Cuneo [1956 to 60]
1962: Barry Hall [1960]
1971: Ken Irvine [1958 to 70]
1971: Graham Williams [1969 to 71]
1973: Warren Evans [1969 to 72]
1978: John Gray* [1975 to 77, 81 to 83]
1978: Mick Healy* [1973 to 77, 79]
1978: Bruce Walker [1971 to 77]
1985: Darren Rodgers [1983 to 84]
1986: Mitchell Cox [1982 to 85]
1986: Cliff Lyons [1985]
1988: Don McKinnon [1977 to 87]
1990: Martin Bella [1986 to 89]

"Japanese-Australians" to play first grade for Norths 08 to 99

*speculation-big time*

Go with me here, the late Jack Pollard wrote an enormous number of books, one of which is: Australian Rugby, The Game and the Players, Ironbark, 1994 [2nd ed]. Its a great read for its league content alone. From said book:

Winston Philip [Blow] IDE was a centre who played 2 tests for Australia before WWII, he was the son of a Japanese silk printer who settled here in 1894. He played for Northern Suburbs RU, NSW, GPS in Brisbane, QLD and 2 tests against the All Blacks in 1938. Like Len Smith he got picked for the ill fated 1939 Wallabies tour [WWII declared the day they arrived in England].

Winston died during the war while serving in the AIF, 'captured' at Singapore, Burma Railway hell for 3 years then drowned when the 'Rakuyo Maru' was torpedoed by US submarines. A hero to the end it seems.

IDE and his 3 brothers [Taki, Roy and Harry] all played first XV for their school, North Sydney Technical High School as well as being Northbridge juniors.

To my point: Whiticker and Hudson have an R.Ide playing 17 games for Norths between 1916 and 1919, he scored 1 try.

So on the basis of IDE being a Japanese name and the IDE family having an obvious North Sydney connection [highlighted above]. I declare R.IDE the first Japanese-Australian to play first grade for North Sydney [and lets go long here, the first Japanese-Australian to play first grade rugby league in Australia] to my belief!

A later edition [6th edition, 2007] of Whiticker & Hudson lists an R.Ide as playing 14 games from 1917-1919 and a J. Ide playing once in 1916, so they must have found Uncle John!

According to the inside back page of today's Courier-Mail [April 18-19, 2009 Mike Colman's Sports Week column]: a film crew is in Brisbane to film a doco on Winston IDE.

Fellow Bearaphiles

Having a look at what was posted on the official history section of the North Sydney Bears Football Club site, i have found a few errors i made-which have been adjusted.

Also a few things to check with other sources before i edit some of my other above posts.

Again-any errors, typos or omissions pointed out would be much appreciated.

I added some of the stats here to the relevant wikipedia page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sydney_Bears.

Feel free to grab from here anything that would be wiki relevant. I also removed some of the muck that [presumably] was planted by a Manly urchin.
