http://www.northsydneybears.com.au/Bears%20Den/News/Reports/20060503-north-sydney-visit-newcastle.htm

This weekend the Mighty Red & Black travel to the land of the Red & Blue as they face the David Fairleigh coached Newcastle Knights. ‘Daisy’, was a tough Bear to beat in his day and the Norths team will be looking to back up their win against the Bulldogs in what is expected to be an evenly match contest.

In Jersey Flegg the Bears will be looking for a big game against the top place Newcastle under 20s side. Also a big Novocastrian crowd will ensure a great atmosphere as they gather for the first grade match between the Knights and the Broncos.

The Bears Jersey Flegg spar with the knights at 10:50 a.m. The Premier League clash will begin at 12:30 p.m. followed by the Knights V the Broncos match at 2:30 p.m.

David Kidwell, Matt King and Jake Webster from the Storm are playing in the Test this weekend. If Kidwell can't back up for the Storm it appears that Scott Hill will be his replacement. Chris Walker will be on standby for King and Webster if they can't back up, although Smith Samau could be called into the Storm line-up ahead of Walker. Let's hope the 3 Test players all get through the match without injury and that they can all back up for the Storm.

It looks like Scott Hill will be playing for the Storm tonight. And Chris Walker injured himself in training.

Knights 44 defeated Bears 16.

Ryan Shortland (in place of Watkins), Ben Cross (in place of Sua), Matthew Bartlett and Jamie Feeney (both second rows) were all inclusions into the starting line-up.

The players used from the bench were Daniel Watkins, Eddie Sua, Bede Tuohy and Brad Domek. The four players on the bench who weren’t used were Ryan Russell, Richard Retimana, Casey Ellis and James Maloney.

It was a very ordinary performance by the Bears.

The Knights scored 3 tries in the first 10 minutes and two more later in the half to lead 30 to nil at halftime.

The Knights scored a try after 5 minutes of the second half. The Bears scored their first 7 minutes later when Ben Black ran through a gap in the middle of the park 25m out from the line and ran to the left corner to score. Daniel Russell converted.
The Knights scored 2 more tries in the second half to take the score to 44-6.
In the last 5 minutes the Bears were able to get some more points on the board when Ryan Shortland scored from a pass form Jamie Feeney and Ben Ellis dived over to score with second remaining and Russell converted.

I guess one positive to take out of the match is that if next week we play like we did in the last 5 minutes we will win 160 to nil. Can we do it? You will have to come to North Sydney Oval to find out.

Another positive was the appearance of Ben Cross and Ryan Shortland from the Storm. Hopefully we will have them for the rest of the season now. Cross is very strong up front which is something we need while Shortland is usually solid in the centres.

Jersey Flegg improved on last week’s performance but still lost 44-6 to the undefeated Knights. The Bears try came in the first half when Arnold Mano offloaded to James Maloney who scored and converted.
