THE Willoughby Roos will channel their inner tigers this season, with the addition of a new coach to the club. Wests Tigers head coach Jason Taylor will take charge of the Mini Footy team at the Roos.
Taylor, who played first grade for North Sydney, Western Suburbs and Parramatta Eels over his 11-year career, said he was up to the challenge of coaching at both ends of the footy spectrum.
"The Willoughby Roos is a great club for kids to learn rugby league," he said.
"I watched last year's under-6 team play throughout the year and I am impressed how the game is focused on fun and participation, but still develops core skills and teamwork.
"I'll be coaching Mini Footy, which is a format specially designed for kids aged 4-8 and maximises involvement and enjoyment."
Roos official Tony Bellia said the club was excited to have Taylor on board.
"While he coaches at an elite level in his day job, he brings a lifetime of experience growing up with rugby league," he said.
"He's also a dad, just like the rest of our coaches, so he's pretty grounded in terms of what is really important to both kids and their parents.
"Under-6 and 7 teams have their coaches on the field and Jason will be proactively ensuring all the kids get involved and have fun."
Bellia said the club was focused on ensuring any child could enjoy playing rugby league if they wanted to play.
"No child wants to miss out on playing footy for their school and Mini Footy gives them a great headstart."
