ISP NSW | Country Round
Simon Masterton
Wed 20th April, 12:45PM

ON THE MOVE: The Intrust Super Premiership NSW and some of its star performers including Omar Slaimankhel are heading to the bush.

The state’s regional areas are set to welcome high-level Rugby League as the Intrust Super Premiership NSW holds its Country Round in Round 9.

Bathurst, Moss Vale, Cessnock, Woy Woy and Nowra will taste semi-professional Rugby League, as the NSWRL looks forward to the annual Country-City Clash at Tamworth’s Scully Park on 8 May.

NSWRL CEO David Trodden reiterated the importance of recognising regional audiences.

“It’s important that the competition is accessible to as many people as possible and the rural population,” Trodden told NSWRL.com.au. “Earlier this year we held our fourth consecutive Hogs For The Homeless tour, which saw a crew of NSW True Blues visit regional areas and engage fans who don’t normally get the chance to meet their heroes.

“The NSWRL is committed to reaching rural audiences and the relocation of the premier state-based Rugby League competition in Country Round underpins that.”

Trodden points out that the competition already reaches further than it ever did before, with permanent fixtures in Newcastle, Wyong, Canberra and Wollongong.

“Rugby League has gradually expanded over the past 20 years,” Trodden said. “We have audiences that span across the state on a normal weekend, but this weekend will be particularly wide-reaching for the Intrust Super Premiership NSW.”

To be held across the weekend of 30 April and 1 May, the fixtures are as follows:

Saturday, 30 April 2016
12.40 pm Penrith Panthers v Mounties - Carrington Oval, Bathurst (Fox Sports Match Of The Round)
3.00 pm Wests Tigers v North Sydney Bears - Moss Vale Oval
4.45 pm Wentworthville v Newtown Jets - Cessnock Showground
7.30 pm Newcastle Knights v Wyong - Woy Woy

Sunday, 1 May 2016
11.45 am (NZ time) NZ Warriors v Canterbury Bulldogs - Mt Smart Stadium
3.00 pm Manly Sea Eagles v Illawarra Cutters - Nowra Showground

Does anyone know if Tatulatasi Tasi is injured? He's been great for us so far.

Any other injury updates anyone might have would be welcomed.

Riley Travers dropped down to Concord-Burwood last week to make way for Cody Walker and unfortunately broke his jaw.

Bugger. Broken jaws to halves is a theme this year.

What the NSWRL calls "Moss Vale Oval" is also called "Community Oval", home of the Moss Vale Dragons - an article from its website is below. Entrance to the ground is from Dorkin Avenue (at the bendy bit). The Moss Vale club was founded in 1910 according to its logo, so a long-established RL area. The club plays in Group 6.

I'll be going to the game, but I'll have my dog Shadow with me and she tends to join in when people shout, so I'll probably be standing on my own somewhere. So look for someone with a black dog that looks like this - from her younger days when she was on the books of ACT Rescue and Foster (or "ARF" as it's known). She may be wearing a red bandana if I can find one:

The forecast is for rain at times.

Wests Tigers v North Sydney Bears
Moss Vale Oval, Saturday 30 April
3pm
LIVE commentary http://steelesports.com.au/

The Wests Tigers and Bears will be riding waves of confidence when they meet at Moss Vale. The Bears were one-point last-start victors against the Bulldogs. Boosted by the return of Cody Walker – whose field goal proved pivotal – Norths ran in two tries at the back end of the first half, one a freakish effort scored by Samisoni Langi, plus an important one deep into the match. Cheyne Whitelaw was awarded man of the match, running the ball for 139 metres with his 47 tackles in an 80minute effort in at lock.

Josh Drinkwater, Michael Chee Kam and Josh Addo-Carr, meanwhile, inspired the Wests Tigers to break their two match-losing streak against the Wentworthville Magpies at Ringrose Park last weekend. Addo-Carr crossed for three tries, with Chee Kam bagging a double, while Drinkwater had a hand in all but one of the seven – including a try for himself.

“I thought we started really well, we completed most of our sets in that first half and that set it up for the game. We just got into a bit of habit [when] everything was working for us and that was never going to work for 80 minutes,” Drinkwater told NSWRL.com after the match.

“We spoke at halftime that we had a lot of possession in the first half and a lot of things went our way, [and] that it’s going to even up. Unfortunately didn’t react to it, but we still came away 40-18 against Wenty who are coming second on the ladder, it’s a good result.”

Ins and Outs:
Michael Chee Kam and Asipeli Fine were rewarded with late NRL call-ups last night in their dominant win over the Rabbitohs, meaning they won’t feature in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW competition this weekend. Nathan Milone slots into centre, while the replacement for Fine has not yet been determined.

Key match-up:
Two in-form halves clash at Moss Vale this week, with Drinkwater coming up against Bears superstar Cody Walker. While Drinkwater’s statistics have already been highlighted, Walker returned to the Bears last week after some valuable NRL time, and his field goal proved to be the pivotal difference between the two teams in that game.

Some coverage in the local press - the Southern Highlands News.

Intrust Super Premiership game in Moss Vale
Josh Bartlett
April 29, 2016, 6:30 a.m.

SOME NRL players will take to Community Oval tomorrow.

Regular top graders Cody Walker and Michael Oldfield are among the players listed for an Intrust Super Premiership game at Moss Vale.

The North Sydney Bears will take on the Wests Tigers in a round nine match at 3pm.

The Bears and Tigers both head into the match on the back of victories last round.

North Sydney recorded a 17-16 win over Canterbury while Wests thrashed Wentworthville by 40-18.

North Sydney general manager Greg Florimo said it was set to be an important contest for the Bears and Tigers tomorrow.

"Both teams are on the verge of the top eight and are looking to seal a win," he said.

"The teams are feeder clubs to the NRL, the Bears are reserves to the South Sydney Rabbitohs."

Florimo said Highlands fans could expect a quality contest tomorrow.

He said the Bears would bring their "A game" and "prepare as usual" for the match.

"We are a little bit nervous but certainly excited," Florimo said.

"The [Moss Vale] ground is a little unknown, we are not sure what to expect."

Florimo said the Bears and Tigers would share a friendly rivalry.

"Tigers coach Paul Stringer is an ex-Bear, so we're keen to get one over him," he said.
