|Way Out West Back in 1995 the Western Reds blazed a trail in Perth and now it's time to head back there with the razzle dazzle Wests Tigers.
In 2019, NSW Will Meet Queensland in an historic State of Origin game, played in a $1.5 billion stadium in Perth.
The following year the Wests Tigers will play their first home game at the very same stadium.
Yes, my mail is that the Tigers will relocate to Perth.
NRL boss Todd Greenberg won't entertain expansion and nor should he. There just aren't enough quality players to increase the number of teams in the premiership.
Meanwhile, there are too many sides located in Sydney.
Rugby league is making huge inroads in Perth, with hundreds of kids sidestepping aerial ping-pong to play the greatest game of all.
Wests Tigers are a 'bitzer' team. They have a bit at Campbelltown, a bit at Leichhardt. They need a concrete location.
There's no need for a name change. Wests and Perth have a common spot on the map. Providing the NRL is prepared to open the till and guarantee the necessary funding, the relocation would be an instant success. Sponsorship would be a breeze. There's one particular Perth mining magnate licking his lips in anticipation of the Wests Tigers pitching their tent in his backyard. This bloke has contacts in Sydney, one of whom is an ex-international who's more than capable of managing the relocation.
The AFL went for broke when they relocated South Melbourne to Sydney and re-branded the club the Sydney Swans. A crowd of 42,000 last week at the SCG tells me the move has been successful!
The 2019 Origin in Perth should whet fans' appetite for the Tigers' move far, far west of Campbelltown.
