NRL: Central Queensland Businessman Renews Plans To Lure Titans To Rockhampton

ONE of the richest men in Queensland has revealed plans to lure the Gold Coast Titans away from Cbus Super Stadium and into central Queensland as early as next season.

JM Kelly construction magnate Geoff Murphy entered into discussions with the Titans early last year with a proposal for three matches in Rockhampton in the hope of buying a large stake in the club and potentially relocating it to central Queensland.

His initial offer was refused and Mr Murphy now claims he will soon approach the Titans about holding one-off matches in Rockhampton instead.

“I’d look at any sort of deal — I won’t discount anything,” he said.

“The crowds in central Queensland would outweigh the crowds you’d get down there on the Gold Coast, I’m sorry to say.”

Clear the runway, Hayne Plane is on Titans' radar
Rugby League Week
28 July 2016

Titans Coach Neil Henry is serious about bringing Jarryd Hayne to the club as the Gold Coast continues to build a powerful roster. Henry has already brought big guns Konrad Hurrell and Nathan Peats to the Titans, and signed rising Broncos star Jarrod Wallace until the end of 2019.

The veteran coach has told me that Hayne is firmly on the radar.

"We're in the game," Henry says. "Whether we can make a competitive offer and what his manager wants remains to be seen. But we're interested in him.

"Salary-cap compliance is a big thing and where you fit in a marquee player like that, so we've got to look and see whether we can make it fit for next year.

"That will be determined when we sit down and look at the players we want to sign, the players we've currently got contracts with and those we need to upgrade. If that all turns out then you've got to come up with an offer that's competitive."
