It's hard to disagree with this rather pessimistic appraisal of our chances. I'm still going to head on in there for my dose of disappointment though.

Newtown Jets v North Sydney Bears
Henson Park, Saturday 20 August
3pm
Referee: Ziggy Przeklasa-Adamski
Touch Judges: John Woods, Faye Lehane
Broadcast LIVE on SteeleSports.com.au

The Newtown Jets would be kicking themselves after surrendering a big lead last week to go down to competition front-runners, Mounties. The Bears, meanwhile, suffered an embarrassing 42-6 defeat at the hands of Illawarra last week, which raises some serious questions over their finals-contending credentials for the 2016 season.

The Jets are full of class, and will be steered around the park by Josh Cleeland and Fa’amanu Brown, and with the likes of Jaline Graham, Jacob Gagan and Kurt Capewell in their starting line-up, it is hard to see how the Bears will be able match them in any position on the field.

Both sides are desperate for a victory, with the Jets knocking on the door of the top four, and the Bears hanging by a thread in eighth position on the ladder. Besides Dane Nielsen and David Tyrrell, there is next to no NRL experience in the North Sydney line-up, and it is tough to see how they can defeat a Jets side with so much to play for.

ISP Team List: Jets v Bears
Tue 16th August, 05:02PM

Fielding a team short on experience but full of enthusiasm the Newtown Jets lost no fans when beaten in the final minutes by the Intrust Super Premiership leaders Mounties last weekend.

The Jets delivered a wholehearted performance against a strong Mounties team, one which will have them confident of a bold showing in the final two rounds of the regular season and then in the finals series to follow.

Two Sharks NYC players in Keenan Yorston and Lachlan Stein filled in capably for the Jets, with the pair again named for this weekend’s clash with the North Sydney Bears.

Also set to run out for the Newtown side on Saturday are Sharks-contracted players Fa’amanu Brown, Anthony Moraitis, Junior Roqica, Jacob Gagan, Matt McIlwrick, Josh Cleeland and Kurt Capewell.

Regular front rower Jesse Sene-Lafao has been called up into the Sharks NRL squad for their match against Souths on Monday.

The Jets and Bears, who will play for the Frank Hyde Shield, are scheduled for a 3.00pm kick off at Henson Park on Saturday.

Gee head up Moon! We still in the 8 and I think there is huge potential in this team.Considering our youth and lack of NRL guys I think this squad has done an awesome job.

I was at both the Wyong and Cutters games and yes I agree the performances were chalk and cheese. But fair dinkum, what could go wrong did go wrong last Sunday. It was the old classic "not our day", from bounces of the ball, to tough ref calls, and yes a lot of poor dee I admit.

I'm backing the boys to bounce back against the Jets, I'm sure the dented pride will fire us up.

We deserve a spot in the 8 in my humble opinion, and I think we can bring it home with 2 wins Pray Pray Dancing

From Norths:
Quote:
Calling all North Sydney Fans! Head to Henson Park tomorrow afternoon for the MASSIVE clash against Newtown
The boys need your support to stay into the 8 and a huge crowd this weekend will help us over the line.

From Newtown:
Quote:
Two of Rugby League’s 1908 Foundation Clubs meet at Henson Park on Saturday – and members of the Hyde family will be there in force to see the deciding match in this year’s Frank Hyde Shield series.
When Newtown and North Sydney clash, whether it is at Henson Park or North Sydney Oval, they provide two of the marquee occasions of the entire NSWRL Intrust Super Premiership NSW season.
The Jets must win on Saturday to stay in the quest for a top four finish and the double-chance in the upcoming ISP NSW finals, while the Bears must win to remain in the hunt as one of five clubs battling for the last two places in the top eight. For both clubs, winning the annual Frank Hyde Shield series is a matter of great pride. Frank Hyde remains one of the most admired and respected names in the history of Australian sport, and both the Newtown and North Sydney Rugby League clubs are immensely proud to claim Frank as one of their most honoured ex-players.

I'm confident, but I go into every game thinking that North Sydney can win.

The team sheets have been posted on the NS twitter site:

There are three changes to the squad of 17 but they're not direct swaps:

In - 18 Riley TRAVERS; 20 Jack SEIJKA; and 23 Logan HOUGHTON.
Out - 3 Siosifa TALAKAI; 10 Dave TYRELL; and 15 Latrell SCHAUMKEL.

Piki ROGERS has changed from no. 17 to 19.

I'm listening to the call on Steele Sports Radio.

I've heard all 13 of the starting side called, plus all bench players except Piki Rogers.

Tasi got taken off in the 20th minute with what the commentators said could be a season-ending injury - he wasn't able to put any weight on his leg. They said he'd been NS's best player till that point.

North Sydney seems to be playing better than last week (not that that was a particularly high bar) but are still letting themselves down with poor handling and giving away stupid penalties. But despite that, the Bears lead 6-4 at half time. "Who would have expected that?" said the Steele Sport commentary team. Newtown had two tries disallowed - one for a shepherd, and the other for a knock on in-goal.

North Sydney lose on the bell - an 80th minute try to Newtown to put them ahead 16-12. I feel gutted but gee, it sounded like we played well.

The match centre made a bit of a mess of the interchange, not distinguishing between the first and second halves. The other thing the match centre messed up is the advice BROADCAST: N/A

Jets Beat Buzzer In Brutal Contest
Matt Buxton
Sat 20th August, 05:00PM

Quote:
A tough, brutal, finals-like contest took place at Henson Park, when the Newtown Jets downed the North Sydney Bears with an incredible buzzer-beating try by Jacob Gagan, to steal the game 16-12.

Josh Cleeland was easily the most dangerous player on the park, but all 34 players on the field must be credited for never backing down in what was such a high-intensity encounter, which is sure to be one of the games of 2016.

The Jets now slide into the top four with one round remaining, while the Bears will sweat on other results to see if they remain in the top eight before their much-anticipated do-or-die clash with the Canterbury Bulldogs next weekend.

The win also means that the Frank Hyde Shield will remain in Newtown for the next year.

It took both kickers a few minutes to shake the cobwebs, as the Bears' first kick went out on the full, and Cleeland's attacking grubber was far too big and rolled dead without any Jets player getting close.

The Jets had consecutive sets attacking the Bears line, mainly due to North Sydney not completing their sets at the start of the match, however they beautifully defended their errors and withstood the Jets' attack.

North Sydney had their first real chance to attack by getting a penalty in front of the posts, and they decided to take the gift two-points to take a 2-0 lead despite the Jets dominating in field position and possession.

All of the previous defending paid off for the Bears at the 20 minute mark, as Eli Levido created an overlap with a ball to Sitiveni Moceidreke, who broke free of the Jets' grasp while on the attack before offloading to Tautalatasi Tasi to cross the try-line.

Levido missed the goal that meant the Bears had a 6-0 lead, but off the kick-off set, the try-scorer was hit awkwardly in a tackle, badly injuring his knee and had to be assisted from the field.

The Bears gave away continuous penalties until the referee had enough, and on the eleventh penalty of the afternoon in just the 26th minute, Patrice Siolo was sent to the sin bin and the Jets were playing with an extra man.

It seemed the Bears were going to get away with having 12 men on the field without conceding a point, but a fractured Bears defence allowed Josh Cleeland to step through and score in the ninth minute of Siolo's spell on the sideline.

The kick was missed which meant the Bears led 6-4 at halftime.

The Bears started the second half defensively perfect, and they were rewarded for this effort 10 minutes into the second half when Dane Nielsen made a 50-metre dash down the left sideline. They swung the ball right on the next tackle, and Abbas Miski finished off the try in the corner to extend their lead to 10-4.

Newtown hit back on the hour mark when Josh Cleeland put a grubber down the short side, and Nielsen spilled the ball while back-tracking to retrieve it, and it bounced into the arms of Jacob Gagan who locked up the scores after Fa'amanu Brown perfectly converted.

The next 10 minutes were incredibly tense, but the second penalty of the half was blown in prime field possession for the Jets, who slotted a penalty goal to take a 12-10 lead in the 70th minute.

Jack Siejka collided into the hip Junior Roqica shortly afterwards, and after a long delay, had to be assisted off the field.

The Bears eventually marched up-field, and alike the Jets just moments before, they were gifted a penalty in range, and Levido slotted the two-points to lock up the scores with six minutes remaining.

Levido beautifully struck a 40-metre field-goal attempt which missed to the left, but on the seven-tackle set, the Jets dropped the ball inside their half, giving the Bears a chance in the dying minutes.

Levido had a second-shot, but some last-ditch pressure from Matt McIlwrick meant the crafty halfback sprayed it to the right.

Off the seven-tackle set, the Jets marched all the way up-field and a mix-up blew the field goal chance. However, in the dying second, Cleeland shifted the ball right to Arana Taumata, who put a perfect grubber in for Gagan, who somehow was the first man to the ball and planted the ball down for the match-winning try.
